Commitment: The Mobilizing Force of Your Potential
Commitment is the daughter of determination and decision, and the mother of persistence and resilience. It is what makes athletes, actors, musicians, speakers, etc… spend ceaseless hours of training in perfecting their skills in view of outstanding performances. It has the power to mobilize all that your potential is made up of and to ignite sustained action.
“True success necessitates dedication to a mission and the discipline, grace, and perseverance needed to live out that mission each and every day.” T.D. Jakes
You will never be really successful in life if you do not commit yourself to carry out your life’s mission, to fulfill your life’s purpose, to respond to your calling or to turn your dream into reality.
Nothing great, noteworthy, has ever been achieved through out history without the commitment of visionary people who believed in an idea and dedicated their lives to it. Be it in science, in politic, in business, in religion, in sport, in cinema or in music; whether at a personal or an organizational level.
For instance, if you take a look at the history of America, you will notice that:
- The declaration of independence was made possible through the commitment of people like John Hancock, Samuel Adams, Richard Henry Lee and Thomas Jefferson who believed in the freedom of America and dedicated themselves to turn their dream of a free America into reality.
- Freedom was extended to African-American slaves through the commitment of Abraham Lincoln who helped abolish slavery at the prize of his life in the nineteenth century.
- Inspired by Gandhi, Martin Luther King committed himself, putting his life at stake, to fight for civil rights in his country. He fought against racial segregation and discrimination with non-violent means, and won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964. In recognition for his work, he was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal long after his assassination.
There is yet an other dimension above the mental one, this is the spiritual dimension. It is in this dimension that things are really created first. Your intellect can only help you come up with new combinations of old concepts, ideas and plans. Creation takes place in the spirit where one by faith receives inspiration through the faculty of intuition. This is why at SucceedingLife.com, we believe that the starting point of one’s quest for his life’s purpose should be God. The spiritual realm is so vast such that one can get lost in it, but starting with God will put you on the right track.
Your calling will take you to your destiny, a place where you have never been before. Even though you may have a mental picture of that place, you do not exactly know what you will encounter on your way to getting there.
Therefore you need to have faith in your creator, to believe that he has created you for that specific purpose, and to believe that he has equipped you for that journey.
Having faith in God, believing in your life’s purpose and in your capability to fulfill it, is the first step to the release of your potential
As you may know, the idea of the American Dream finds its roots in the Declaration of Independence; and today, America, the greatest nation in the world which exercises global political, economic and military influence, offers the opportunity to millions of people from across the world to share this freedom which inspired the lives of these great men.
Commitment is powerful. According to leadership expert Dr Frank Wagner, author of The Power of Total Commitment: A Leader’s Legacy, the most important single factor in individual success is commitment. He describes it as “Persistence with a purpose”. His famous quote and motto is “Leadership is found at the intersection of character and commitment; what others perceive you stand for and do”.
Biologist James E. Womack, internationally renowned for his research on cattle genome, said: “Commitment unlocks the doors of imagination, allows vision, and gives us the “right stuff” to turn our dreams into reality.”
J.C. Maxwell, in his book The Success Journey: The Process of Living Your Dreams., wrote: “What separates the developer of a successful dream from a mere daydreamer is committed action. It takes hunger, tenacity and commitment to see a dream though until it becomes a reality.”
