Have you ever exaggerated your accomplishments in front of your pears, secretly hoping to get some pats on your back? I bet you have, like all of us.Do you know that what drove you then was your inborn need to feel that you are important?
The human need for significance
Yes, like anyone else you possess an innate need for significance, a natural desire to be accepted, appreciated, recognized, and to feel that you matter. That is probably why the first thing you did when you came into this world was cry, crying for attention and care.
This need, inherent to all human beings, is so strong that it pushes us to identify ourselves with success. It is a sign that we have been created for a specific purpose. Only to the extent that we acknowledge this need and discover the reason of our being on earth, can we find meaning in life, engage in activities that are relevant to our respective calling, and achieve greatness by contributing positively to our world.
Deep inside you, lies buried the seed of greatness
I want you to realize that God has bestowed upon you some value that cry out for recognition. Part of your value, if not all of it, is made of your potential, your capability to perform noteworthy achievements, to carry out your life mission, and to significantly impact your generation by bringing forth your worth. It is your potential that determines your usefulness.
Potential is useless if not used
What physics say about potential
We know from physics that any object in a given force field has the capacity to generate work; and for it to produce the work that it is capable of, it needs to be accelerated and to change its position by acquiring a new velocity. This capacity, directly related to its mass, is called energy. Depending on its position (at rest or in motion), the energy of an object is either potential or kinetic.
From activation of potential to greatness
This brief intrusion into physics allows me to state that your potential, which can be compared to the potential energy of a body or a system, has to be activated so as to make you change your position vis-à-vis your environment. Only then can you perform the work which will bring the results that the world is impatiently waiting for. Like an object is submitted to the force of the field in which it is placed, you are exposed to the different needs of this world – needs that make demands on your potential. These needs can be paralleled to the force of a field. The stronger you feel them; the more likely you are called to meet them. And that’s where your greatness lies.
But how do I activate my potential and step into my greatness?- you may ask.
Here 4 steps that will take you through the whole process:
- Acknowledge people’s needs around you. Realize that they make demand on your potential; and understand that if you can see and feel them, you can meet them.
- Awaken to your potential (your ability to meet these needs)
- Change your position vis-à-vis the world from a simple spectator to an actor by believing that you can meet these needs. Belief acts like an accelerating force that allows an object to respond to “the demands” of a force field. It activates potential
- Get down into the arena, bring out your value, meet those needs that you are sensitive to, and make things change for the better
Real success in life is not about you but about others. It’s not about achieving your own personal goals but about dedicating your life to meeting humanity’s needs. It’s about bringing out that worth God has deposited in you in order to contribute value to the world. That’s exactly what mother Teresa did, and what all successful people do. The world recognizes their values because they are sensitive to its needs. They don’t have to overstate their accomplishments; their deeds are eloquent enough to recommend them.
